A good friend of mine, also an American married to a
German, and living here in Germany, told me that her six-year-old son's
preschool teacher gave him some stones and told him that they would give him
good dreams. Interesting. They also had a Halloween party in his class.
Halloween has unfortunately been gaining popularity here. Without going into all
the pros and cons and hows and whys of Christians celebrating Halloween (we
don't celebrate it), I DO have to mention that, while in the United States, it's
quite possible to have a Halloween party with people dressed as princesses and
koala bears and rabbits and other "innocent" things, in Germany, it's not.
Halloween is ONLY for scary, gruesome stuff here. If a child were to appear
dressed as a cowboy or princess, he/she would be laughed out of the room!
At least there wasn't anything "Halloweeny" at my
children's school. Jacob did make ghosts a couple of weeks ago, which I could do
without, but at least that was in connection with learning the letter "U" (a
ghost goes "uuuuuu" in German, apparently...), not Halloween.
