I did try to post this already on the 23rd, but the site wouldn't cooperate.
Melissa Busekros left her foster family and arrived home at 3:00 a.m. on the
morning of her 16th birthday. As of today, I still haven't heard of any
problems. An interview
(in German) with Melissa is already being circulated--it was sent to me by
four different sources today! Some people have tried to claim that homeschooling
was and is not the issue in Melissa's case, so I find it particularly
encouraging that Melissa herself says that she hopes that the publicity over her
situation will help homeschoolers in Germany. They're not even a "die-hard
homeschooling family": the other children are all in school, and Melissa was
only taken out of SOME classes, because that was right for HER at THAT time. She
is considering going back to public school herself--but still believes that one
should have the right to choose.
The other good news is that the family that was escaping to Canada arrived
there safely, although not without a certain amount of adventure. But they are
there and being overwhelmed with the support they are receiving from all sides
(practical, financial, and emotional.)
For our family...we thought we had settled the plans for staying in the
Netherlands, but they fell through, so we're looking for other options (still in
the Netherlands). If anyone reading this knows of something for us, preferably
in Venlo, that won't cost 500 Euros a week for nine weeks, please let me know...
